David is born, bred, and educated in Dunedin. After graduating from Otago University, he worked for Audit New Zealand.

In January 1995, David joined J W Smeaton and became a Partner in 1997. David was a director of the Otago Chamber of Commerce for 7 years and 9 months. He was President of the Chamber for 2 years.
